Dolan Learning Center, Cold Spring Harbor Labs: The mission of the Dolan DNA Learning Center is to prepare students and families to thrive in the gene age. We envision a day when all elementary students are exposed to principles of genetics and disease risk; when all high school students have the opportunity to do hands-on experiments with DNA; and when all families have access to the genetic information they need to make informed health care choices.
Voet, Voet and Pratt Text, Fall 2002: We will adhere to much of the information within this text but you are expected to also explore some of the referenced material listed in the chapter figures and indexes.
Learning Strategies: Gale Rhodes from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Southern Maine has some suggestions for learning Biochemistry. One in particular can be succinctly put this way...NO WHINNYING! Copyright 2003 Gale Rhodes. Adapted with permission of the author.
Recognizing the common functional groups in biochemistry will significantly improve the study and understanding of biochemical molecules and their interactions. A review of these structures and other relevant subjects is provided at MIT Biology Hypertextbook from MIT core biology course.
The Nobel e-Museum: This site offers information on all 736 Prize Winners to date, the Nobel Organization, Alfred Nobel, and Nobel events, as well as educational material and games. The Virtual Biochemistry Lab is quite fascinating.
Entropy: This is a very fascinating treatment of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, entropy and free energy presented by Frank Lambert, Professor Emeritus, Occidental College.
Dr. Phillip Tobias (below), co-discoverer of Homo habilis, Professor Emeritus at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and presently Director of the Sterkfontein Research Unit is referred to as the 'grand old man' of South African anthropology. His keen insights and interest in human diversity is awe inspiring.
RasMol: Molecular Structures:This is a free program to view molecular structures in three-dimensions
DNA structure: Within this site the student can visualize complex molecules like DNA in 3-dimensional space.
Topics in Cell Biology: Just as the title suggests, multiple topics related to cell structure and function are found at this site
New Scientist: Recent news events and esoteric topics related to biology and chemistry in our everyday lives.
The Journal of Biological Chemistry offers papers free of charge prior to copy editing and publication in printed journal. Take a look at some fascinating work.
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA also provides journal articles, one month old, free of charge. These articles are archived online back to 1990.
The American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology offer free online select articles from its journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomic. This new journal provides a source of important advances in the comparative analysis of protein structure and function.
Selected volumes of the Journal of Biochemistry are available online. Full size figures are an attractive feature of this online journal.
We are all familar with the National Library of Medicine's online resource, PubMed. There is no better nor more convienent means of searching for references for those last minute research papers.
There will be provided here some references to seminal works in biochemistry. Presented will be historical accounts of discoveries by Antoine Lavoisier and J.B.S. Haldane as well as discoveries by Nobel laureates like James Watson and Fritz Lipmann. Here is a work published in 1944 by Avery, MacLeod and McCarty on the study of the chemical nature of transformation as a PDF
