Masked Booby

Masked Boobies breed on islands in warm-water areas of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. Living on islands with no land-based predators, these birds have no fear of people. The name "booby" comes from the fact that hungry sailors could walk right up to them without frightening them away.

These Masked Boobies were very cooperative during our August 1998 trip. When we see Masked Boobies we usually see them well. For more photos of these birds, see Dan Purrington's August 1998 log and Dave Patton's Masked Booby photos.
